Music-Fuelled Drawing

Posted in Black and White Drawings, Hand-drawn stuff on September 29, 2010 by Davie

When I draw, I always listen to music if possible.  It helps me get in the mood, and the right songs can really jump-start the imagination.  The picture below, bane of several Micron pens, was started and finished while listening to this.

It's pretty badass.

Curse my crappy scanner.

The genre of music depends on the subject matter.  For robots and aliens and the like, I have Pendulum and the Prodigy.  Medieval fantasy usually warrants a bit of epic video game soundtrack, and when drawing from life I’ll listen to Cage the Elephant or Franz Ferdinand.  Clutch is for monsters, Metallica’s for more demonic characters.  So on and so forth.  My best drawings are always the product of a bizarre mix of genres playing in my ear.

Here is some art!

That is all.

Merchant Caravan

Posted in Black and White Drawings, Hand-drawn stuff on December 15, 2009 by Davie

A couple months ago, I realized I hardly drew anyone not armor-clad and holding a weapon, so I decided on a change of pace.  I would draw a wealthy merhant and his caravan…surrounded by beweaponed mercenaries!  Anyhow, the wagon kind of got phased out and replaced my more and more hardcore-lookin’ guys in the background, but I still like it.  It’s the largest group of people I’ve really put any effort into drawing, and the hatching and detail level came out quite well as far as I’mk concerned.  The only thing that really bugs me is that I couldn’t make the wagon wheel look round, and the merchant’s right eye is kind of offset and bugging out.  But I put a lot of work into this one, and have been told it’s one of my best drawings.  So enjoy!  I’ll probably color it eventually, along with all my other drawings…

He has a fancy hat.

Bad Ass

Posted in Black and White Drawings, Hand-drawn stuff on October 14, 2009 by Davie

Here’s another drawing.  This’ll be the last for a little while, as I have to scan a new batch of stuff and my scanner is a notorious pain in the ass.

I essentially tried to come up with the most badass character possible, hence the combination of trenchcoat and power armor, the revolving rifle, the scimitar, the beard stubble, etc.   This was sliiiightly inspired by Borderlands, which is going to be amazing.

Hmm…my only real issue with this one is that his face is kinda lopsided and ugly.  I think it could’ve been better.

Jake Richmond pointed out that the shoulder pauldrons are far too restrictive. He's absolutely right, but the Rule of Cool is quite prevalent in this one.

Angry Man With Big Sword

Posted in Black and White Drawings, Hand-drawn stuff on October 13, 2009 by Davie

Ah, here we are.  This is one of my favorites.  I fell like I managed a level of detail I can rarely pull together.  Eventually I’ll color it, and it’ll look super awesome.

If I ever do a comic with this guy, he’ll be the brother of that other woman in armor I drew a few months ago on my old blog.  They’ll be mercenary captains or some such.

The position of his sword is a little unnatural, but it's a really big sword.

More to come tomorrow!

Space Chicken and Fanatic Mechanic

So, for my first real post in a new location, here are a couple of drawings I’ve done recently.  Hooray for Warhammer 40k and all its GRIMDARK!

Hey, a caption! We've got us a Kroot, the most badass alien in the 40k universe. At least, in my opinion.

An Imperial Techpriest of the Adeptus Mechanicus. These guys have a tendency to be ludicrously dogmatic and protective of machines. It's probably all the robot bits.
